Description:                    

Help students to achieve their greatest potential, learn to become independent, make successful transitions and to interact with their peers

Essential Functions:

• Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
• Has a legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values
• Shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District
• Ensure safety of students
• Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., custody papers, medical records, any communication regarding students
• Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
• Put into place positive student behavior plans according to training
• Direct disciplinary cases to the building principal
• Keep students focused and on-task, every period, as much as possible
• Ability to carry out policies and procedures of the Board of Education and the building principal
• Carry out any action that would allow any student with disabilities to access any Jackson Local Schools activities that may include (but not limited to); changing diapers, assisting with restroom visits, delegated nursing services such as tube feeding (with training), assisting with management of medical needs such as diabetes, assisting with feeding/preparing food for students that have physical needs
• Supervise and assist students at various school activities and functions
• Monitor and manage student behavior as directed by the teacher
• Perform lunchroom, transportation drop off and pick up, and recess duties as directed by building principal
• Assist students in the cafeteria, playground/recess, hall and/or classroom
• Assist students in the development of life skills and appropriate social behaviors
• Conduct individual or small group reinforcing exercises as directed by the teacher
• Supervise students as directed by the teacher
• Assist teacher with clerical duties (i.e., prepare papers, typing, etc.) as well as classroom-based needs as directed by the teacher/case facilitator/intervention specialist

 Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Record keeping as necessary
• Attend meetings and in-services/training as required
• Keep students current on homework assignments
• Assist students that have physical disabilities
• Must be able to deal appropriately with students who exhibit emotional or behavioral problems, aggressive behavior, or physical problems
• Must be willing to be trained in verbal de-escalation, seclusion, and restraint training
• Must be able to use the de-escalation, seclusion, and restraint training techniques if student(s) is in danger of harming themselves or others
• Must be willing to give input/sign when documenting instances of seclusion and/or restraint
• Ability to manage student behavior effectively
• Sensitivity to students with disabilities including confidentiality
• Foster independence for students with disabilities
• Perform other duties related to the education and supervision of students with disabilities
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal/Director of Special Programs

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Classroom experience with students with disabilities preferred
• Appropriate state of Ohio certification/license, i.e., Ohio Educational Aide Permit
• FBI/BCI background check
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• First aid/CPR training desirable
• Training in instructional methodologies desirable

Additional Working Conditions:

• May be reassigned to other classrooms/students, work areas or buildings (at any point, even mid- year) as student needs change
• Frequent interaction with students that struggle behaviorally
• Exposure to blood and bodily fluids
• Occasional requirement to travel, e.g., to grocery store, field trips
• Occasional requirement to “2-person lift” and carry children over 50 pounds
• Occasional requirement to climb, kneel, sit, and balance
• Occasional requirement to single lift and carry up to approximately 50 pounds
• Occasional overtime work will be requested and expected of the employee
